Six Months to Go: How the Democrats Are Going to Win in 2024
The American experiment in democracy is on the line this year, and we know that fear, anxiety, anger, and confusion are running high among people of good will. It’s not going to be easy, but there are several pieces of evidence – FACTUAL EVIDENCE – that point to Joe Biden winning the Presidency, the Democratic Party gaining control of the US House, and maybe, if everything falls right, the Democratic Party narrowly holding on to the US Senate. This lecture identifies the key ways in which Democrats can – and likely will – win in 2024. It starts with the fight for reproductive rights, and in a beautiful bit of karmic irony, we’re going to see the Republican Party’s voter-suppression laws and rhetoric hurt their candidates.
Speaker: Professor David Domke
Dates: Wednesday, May 15, 5 pm PT, on Zoom
This lecture will be recorded and shared with all registrants to watch on your own timing.
Domke Lecture: How the Democrats COULD win in 2022: Congressional Redistricting
This is the first in a series of public lectures -- to be done roughly every other month until Election Day -- exploring how the Democratic Party COULD win the midterm congressional elections in 2022. To be clear, such an outcome is very, very unlikely. But just possibly, if Covid gets better and the Dems make some good choices and the Republicans don’t and then a bunch of other things line up, just maybe the Democrats could hold the US Senate and US House. This lecture series will explore a collection of political dynamics that could offer some hope for the Democrats this year. This specific lecture will focus on the 2021 and 2022 re-drawing of congressional districts by states, which has been better for Democrats than we might have expected.
Speaker: Professor David Domke, Common Power

14 MONTHS, 7 STATES, 1 MISSION: The Road to 2022
Elections have consequences. Who runs and who gets elected REALLY matters. 2020 saved America, barely. But now we face a set of lies from Donald Trump and aligned Republicans about elections and voting that has the potential -- indeed, the likelihood if we don't intervene now -- to undermine the future of American democracy. We have 14 months to the 2022 elections, and we can impact the outcome If. We. Do. Voter. Work. This lecture is focused on 7 key states that (a) will be crucial for control of the US Congress, and (b) have a number of vital governor and state Supreme Court elections.

HOW THEY BEAT THE FILIBUSTER: Freedom Summer, Selma, LBJ, and the 1965 Voting Rights Act
Many of us are working hard right now to convince the Democratic Party to eliminate the filibuster in the US Senate. At best, it’s a longshot. That means the Dems will likely have to beat the filibuster in order to pass legislation for voting rights, immigration, climate change, and so much more. It won’t be easy, but it can be done. And it was done, with the passage by Congress of landmark civil rights legislation in 1964 and 1965. This three-lecture series examines the multi-year push in the first half of the 1960s by activists, politicians, and community leaders that led to the Voting Rights Act. It was a defining moment for the Civil Rights Movement that made America far more of a genuine democracy than ever before. Lectures both (a) will occur live at 5 pm PDT on July 5 + July 6 + July 7 via Zoom, and (b) will be recorded for everyone to watch on your own timing. Registrants will receive viewing instructions one day in advance of the start of the series and then one hour before each lecture. Registration: There are three levels of registration for these lectures. The content is the same across the levels; the different price points are merely for you to pick the one you wish!

All on the Line: The Freedom to Vote 2021 in the US Senate
In the past 60 years, Republicans have waged an unrelenting and highly effective war on voting rights in America. And now their promulgation of The Big Lie of a stolen 2020 election has helped the GOP to unleash a truly terrifying assault on the freedom to vote. In response, Democrats and allied progressive organizations are mobilizing behind the landmark For the People Act (HR1/S1), which significantly would both protect and advance voting rights nationwide. This would be the most important piece of voting legislation since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. And now this bill is scheduled to be considered in the Senate in late June. It is imperative that we mobilize to support this legislation. To be candid, the odds are against its passage, but WE. HAVE. A. CHANCE. And thus we will mobilize and work. This lecture will lay out this moment and what we can do.

EVEN LIZ CHENEY: How Donald Trump Turned Republicans into A Political Cult
The 2021 version of the Republican Party is not the one we used to know. Donald Trump is certainly not the only reason for this shift, but he is the biggest. This lecture examines the communication and psychological strategies of Trump, and how he has molded today’s Republican Party into a cult of Trump. It’s a disaster for everyone, and most dangerously for America.

FROM NEVER TO NOW: The Fight to Vote in America 2021 Part 2
America to a defining crossroads in the fight for voting rights for all. The expansion of voting mechanisms due to Covid, the successes of the Democratic Party, and the record voter turnouts nationally, especially among African Americans, were unacceptable to the Republican Party, which has built its success since the 1960s on voter suppression. Donald Trump and GOP allies responded with an attempt to overthrow the election, and now in spring 2021 Republicans are pursuing legislation across the country that would make it harder for all Americans, and especially Democratic constituencies, to vote. The good news is that Democrats and progressive organizations are fully engaged, and we have a clear, significant role to play. These lectures lay out the pathways we must take right now in the fight to vote in America.

EMERGING FROM THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY: The 2021 American Political Landscape Part 2
This is a two-lecture series, Monday May 3 + Tuesday May 4. From the moment Donald Trump descended down the hotel escalator into American presidential politics in 2015, we were in profound national chaos and turmoil for more than four years. He did not birth these realities, but he escalated them to his advantage. Millions have suffered because of Trumpism, hundreds of thousands have died, international alliances have been sundered, and our political system experienced -- and still does -- existential peril. Roughly 100 days into the administration of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris, let’s take stock of the political landscape at this unprecedented moment in America.
