HOW THEY BEAT THE FILIBUSTER: Freedom Summer, Selma, LBJ, and the 1965 Voting Rights Act
Many of us are working hard right now to convince the Democratic Party to eliminate the filibuster in the US Senate. At best, it’s a longshot. That means the Dems will likely have to beat the filibuster in order to pass legislation for voting rights, immigration, climate change, and so much more. It won’t be easy, but it can be done. And it was done, with the passage by Congress of landmark civil rights legislation in 1964 and 1965. This three-lecture series examines the multi-year push in the first half of the 1960s by activists, politicians, and community leaders that led to the Voting Rights Act. It was a defining moment for the Civil Rights Movement that made America far more of a genuine democracy than ever before. Lectures both (a) will occur live at 5 pm PDT on July 5 + July 6 + July 7 via Zoom, and (b) will be recorded for everyone to watch on your own timing. Registrants will receive viewing instructions one day in advance of the start of the series and then one hour before each lecture. Registration: There are three levels of registration for these lectures. The content is the same across the levels; the different price points are merely for you to pick the one you wish!

All on the Line: The Freedom to Vote 2021 in the US Senate
In the past 60 years, Republicans have waged an unrelenting and highly effective war on voting rights in America. And now their promulgation of The Big Lie of a stolen 2020 election has helped the GOP to unleash a truly terrifying assault on the freedom to vote. In response, Democrats and allied progressive organizations are mobilizing behind the landmark For the People Act (HR1/S1), which significantly would both protect and advance voting rights nationwide. This would be the most important piece of voting legislation since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. And now this bill is scheduled to be considered in the Senate in late June. It is imperative that we mobilize to support this legislation. To be candid, the odds are against its passage, but WE. HAVE. A. CHANCE. And thus we will mobilize and work. This lecture will lay out this moment and what we can do.

THE NEW LOST CAUSE: From the Confederacy to MAGA’s Big Lie
This is a two-lecture series by AJ Musewe, Director of Interactive History for Common Power, and David Domke, UW prof and Common Power Associate Director, on June 14 + June 16. Overview: We all have watched the “The Big Lie” that Donald Trump and his supporters have spun about the 2020 election: that great American patriot Trump actually won the election but had it stolen by an evil cabal of Democrats, election officials, news media, and election equipment companies. This sounds an awful lot like “The Lost Cause” created by Southern leaders after the US Civil War. In that era, white Southerners forged a narrative of a noble, patriotic white aristocracy that seceded and fought the good fight against an arrogant North, and that the South would have won the war if it had more men and resources. In this lecture series, we examine the characteristics of the Confederacy Lost Cause ideology (that’s lecture 1) and apply these dynamics to the MAGA Nation 2020/2021 argument, which we believe is a New Lost Cause narrative and is profoundly impacting today's American voting rights (that’s lecture 2). Note: this lecture series will be 80% a repeat of the same series we delivered in March, 20% updated and new based on the unfolding developments with the January 6 commission, vote "audit" in Arizona, and the push by Republican state legislatures to restrict voting rights AND to shape educational curricula.
Lecture viewing: Lectures both (a) will occur live at 5 pm PDT on June 14 and June 16 via Zoom, and (b) will be recorded for everyone to watch on your own timing. Registrants will receive viewing instructions one day in advance of each lecture and then one hour before each lecture.
