Truth to Power: Moments That Shifted the Civil Rights Movement- The Political Crucible That Changed America

  • COMMON POWER PO Box 51125 Seattle, WA 98115 United States (map)

The Civil Rights Movement is made up of many moments of immense bravery from original people. Back by popular demand, AJ and David will embark on a three-part lecture series that will start and finish with us breaking down two of the greatest speeches of the Movement.

Lecture Two: The Political Crucible That Changed America

The second lecture will look at the national political landscape in the year between the March on Washington (August 28, 1963) and Fannie Lou Hamer's speech at the 1964 Democratic National Convention (August 22, 1964). The Klan bombed 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, the nation's president who had just publicly committed to civil rights was assassinated, Dr. MLK was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize (he would receive it in autumn 1964), three civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi, the Civil Rights Act was passed, and the Republican Party nominated a presidential candidate who declared that "Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice," an outright encouragement to all white Americans refusing federal government decisions.

One ticket will be good for the whole series!
