Truth to Power: Moments That Shifted the Civil Rights Movement - Eight Minutes of Pure Brilliance and Bravery

  • COMMON POWER PO Box 51125 Seattle, WA 98115 United States (map)

The Civil Rights Movement is made up of many moments of immense bravery from original people. Back by popular demand, AJ and David will embark on a three-part lecture series that will start and finish with us breaking down two of the greatest speeches of the Movement.

Lecture Three: Eight Minutes of Pure Brilliance and Bravery

The final lecture will start with a breakdown of Freedom Summer, the voter registration effort led in Mississippi, and the obstacles faced by those fighting the uphill battle of registering Black voters. In addition to understanding the parties at play, including SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), CORE (Congress for Racial Equality), and COFO (Council of Federated Organizations), we will look at Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer's speech on August 22, 1964, to the Credentials Committee during the 1964 Democratic National Convention. For approximately eight minutes, Mrs. Hamer detailed her harrowing experience simply trying to register to vote, the violence she faced, and her unwavering belief in democracy. We will work to understand the fearlessness it took to publically put oneself on display for the sake of your community and rights and privileges rightfully owned to you and the consequence of those actions.

One ticket will be good for the whole series!
