This is a two-lecture series by David Domke, UW prof and Common Power co-leader, and AJ Musewe, Director of Interactive History for Common Power, on March 8 + March 9. Overview: We all saw “The Big Lie” that Donald Trump and his supporters spun about the 2020 election: that great American patriot Trump actually won the election but had it stolen by an evil cabal of Democrats, election officials, news media, and election equipment companies. This sounds an awful lot like The Big Lie known as “The Lost Cause” created by Southern leaders after the US Civil War. In that era, white Southerners forged a narrative of a noble, patriotic white aristocracy that seceded and fought the good fight against an arrogant North, and that the South would have won the war if it had more men and resources. In this lecture series, we examine the characteristics of the Confederacy Lost Cause ideology (that’s lecture 1) and apply these dynamics to the Trump 2020 argument, which we believe is a New Lost Cause narrative (that’s lecture 2). Viewing details: Lectures both (a) will occur live at 5 pm PST on March 8 and March 9 via Zoom, and (b) will be recorded for everyone to watch on your own timing. Registrants will receive viewing instructions one day in advance of each lecture. There are three levels of registration for these lectures. The content is the same across the levels; the different price points are merely for you to pick the one you wish!
