The emerging Religious Right and Republicans in the 1970s and 1980s weren't interested in abortion, until they saw its political value.
About this event
This is a two-lecture series, July 11 + July 18, both at 5 pm PDT. The US Supreme Court has overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that guarantees a person's right to an abortion. This ruling is a outcome -- one that will have monumental subsequent impacts -- that can be traced to the late 1970s and early 1980s when an emerging Religious Right and the Republican Party made a deal: abortion could be a galvanizing issue that worked to the benefit of both. It was always pure, cold calculus, with political, religious, and racial goals intertwined. These lectures examine the strategies, the communications, and the key players who brokered the deal, and considers where this "marriage" stands today. Note: I offered these lectures in early June. At the request of many, I want to offer these again now that the Supreme Court has issued its ruling.
Speaker: David Domke
Lectures both (a) will occur live at 5 pm PDT on July 11 and July 18 via Zoom, and (b) will be recorded for everyone to watch on your own timing. Registrants will receive viewing instructions one day in advance of the lecture and then one hour before the lecture.
There are three levels of registration for these lectures. The content is the same across the levels; the different price points are merely for you to pick the one you wish!
