Rob Sand
Rob Sand, Iowa’s state auditor, and currently is the only Democrat among all statewide elected officials. Historically, Iowa has been a Republican-leaning swing state. It witnessed a 20-year stretch of enthusiasm for Democratic presidential candidates (1992-2012), but since then has tilted significantly to the right. At present, Iowa’s entire congressional delegation is Republican. Similarly, the Iowa legislature is in Republican hands, and Republicans have held the governor’s office for over a decade. Rob Sand, the current state auditor and a former public corruption prosecutor, is aiming to change that. With his emphasis on “more public service and less politics,” along with a reputation for bipartisanship, Rob has won election to the state auditor’s office twice. He believes that allowing one party to control state government over a long period can lead to corruption. Rob’s candidacy presents a unique opportunity to bring much-needed change to Iowa. Common Power’s special approach to canvassing will be an asset to the Rob Sand for Iowa Campaign as we speak with Iowans about their concerns and encourage them to support Rob in November.
At present, Rob Sand has one opponent in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. There are five candidates vying to be the Republican gubernatorial nominee. One Republican candidate, Randy Feenstra, is already taking direct aim at Rob Sand with a planned multimedia ad campaign.
