The Union in Crisis: What 1864 Tells Us About 2022 and Democracy

  • COMMON POWER PO Box 51125 Seattle, WA 98115 United States (map)

In 1864, the United States was in war over slavery. President Abraham Lincoln and the Union got us through. The Presidential Campaign AND the military campaigns in 1864 were defining crucibles for the nation. How did they do it, and what can we learn about 2022 and our existential fight for democracy? There's a lot we can learn, and then we need to act. Note: this lecture is part of a "Meet-the-Moment Mondays" series offered by the Institute for Common Power.
