Lunch and Learn: Origins of Black History Month

  • COMMON POWER PO Box 51125 Seattle, WA 98115 United States (map)

For the first Lunch and Learn of 2021, we are going to start with the origins of Black History Month. Most of what folks learn about BHM is in school and most of the time it’s not very comprehensive nor does it talk about the origins. So to kick off our new season of learning, we are going to look at how Black History Month came to be and it’s creator, Carter G. Woodson. We will also talk about Black folks we should know about and set ourselves up for future readings and lessons highlighting Black accomplishments.

The theme for BHM 2021 is "The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity" and we will talk a bit about how the Black family image has shifted and been influenced.

Please read as many of the articles as you are able to and come ready to engage in community and conversation. As always, this is a no knowledge shaming space. We are here to learn together in a safe space and build trust while processing difficult parts of our collective history.
