Understanding support and opposition to Critical Race Theory. Is it really being taught in schools?

  • COMMON POWER PO Box 51125 Seattle, WA 98115 United States (map)

We are in the midst of political and social action that envokes the Civil Rights Movement in the late 50s and 60s. We are witnessing something that harkens back a little further than that. In the 1930s, we have learned through history that books were seen as weapons and tools of control depending on which side you were on. We are seeing something that makes me think loosely about those times. It’s all over the news and has been for some time and yet, there seems to be confusion around what Critical Race Theory actually is and if that’s what’s being taught in schools. This confusion and fear are causing folks to ban books, and even in some examples, burn them. We are seeing blow-ups happen at school board meetings and seeing the effects of teachers in the classroom.

In honor of the launch of the Institute, we are going to look at the origins of CRT from one of its founders and also look at what those in opposition are actually opposing. In order for us to move with care and equity, we must be able to look at all sides of an argument. We have an uphill battle ahead of us, let’s make sure we are well equipt for the work ahead.
