Food desert vs food apartheid: How your zip code affects your access to food

  • COMMON POWER PO Box 51125 Seattle, WA 98115 United States (map)

Have you heard of the terms ‘food desert’ or ‘food apartheid’ in conversations more recently and are not too sure what it means? Maybe you have never heard of these terms before but you might have driven through communities experiencing this. Ever notice the number of fast-food restaurants in communities of color vs other communities?. These terms are crucial to understanding the fight for food justice. We live in a country full of abundance and yet we have millions of people who are food insecure. No Kid Hungry estimates that 1 in 6 kids go without food and would be without food were it not for school breakfast and lunch. Access to healthy food is also an issue depending on where you live. Among the articles, you will read about how a food desert was created in the central district here in Seattle with the removal of the neighborhood grocery store, Red Apple.

For this session of lunch and learn, we will learn about difficulties in getting access to fresh and healthy foods, understand what the terms ‘food desert’ or ‘food apartheid’ mean,s and get introduced to some folks that are on the front lines of getting healthier food into more homes.
