Education to Action: A Conversation with Dr. Harry Edwards - The Inaugural Institute for Common Power Award

  • COMMON POWER PO Box 51125 Seattle, WA 98115 United States (map)

Please join us for three events to kick off our second year, and help us to raise funds to support educators who are on the front lines of the struggle for truth and democracy. We are seeking to raise funds to send 100 teachers -- from kindergarten through higher education, from all across the United States and beyond -- to travel with the Institute on learning tours, to enroll in continuing education, and to receive small grants to support the zillion ideas that teachers have that school districts can't or won't fund. We need your support!

The first of three events:

Speaker: Dr. Harry Edwards

Date: Monday, July 17th at 5 pm PDT on Zoom

Dr. Edwards was the lead organizer of the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR), which led American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos to raise black-gloved Black Power salutes atop the Olympic medal stand in 1968. Dr. Edwards has been actively working for racial justice for decades. As a former professor at San Jose State University and the University of California, Berkeley, he is considered the father of a field of study, the Sociology of Sports. He currently serves as a consultant to major teams like the San Francisco 49ers.

Dr. Harry Edwards will be receiving the Institute for Common Power Education to Action Award & engaging in conversation with educator ambassadors.
