The Political Attack on Education in America: Notes from Texas

  • COMMON POWER PO Box 51125 Seattle, WA 98115 United States (map)

The attack by political conservatives on accurate education about American history, especially on matters of race and voting, is at DefCon 1. Educators are being intimidated, muzzled, and discouraged, and our students are being provided incomplete, inaccurate, and damaging information. One professor at Collin College in Texas is making a stand. Come here the story of Michael Phillips, who is being fired for his work opposing Confederate monuments, criticizing his college’s lax Covid protocols, and for highlighting America’s history of racial injustices. Phillips is an award-winning professor who is now suing Collin College for violation of his free speech rights. Dr. Terry Scott is an award-winning professor at Hood College, expert on US race relations and history, and will become Director of the Institute for Common Power this spring. David Domke is a retired UW professor, the author of two books on American politics and democracy, and a senior leader of Common Power. They will discuss with clear eyes and a candid voice how the political assault on teaching accurately about American history and politics is impacting all of us.
