Welcome to a special session of learning! August holds a special place in the history of Black folks. This special session is set up to help educate us and build community as we will dig into major moments that took place in this month and specifically, on August 28th. 

There’s a lot that happened this month and I want to be clear that you are NOT obligated to read all the articles presented. We will be focusing the discussion on the events of August 28th but I wanted you to have a picture of how critical August is to many Black folks in this country. Please read what you can and feel free to hop around. Some of the information may be familiar and some will be new. These selections were created to help you familiarize yourself with moments that we may not have been taught in school or taught accurately if we were taught. Some of these topics will be covered in depth at a later date but are part of the larger conversation around the importance of August in American history. 

To reiterate, this is a safe space to learn and is a no knowledge shaming zone. We are all here to learn and unlearn many untruths we were taught so I ask that you come with an open mind.
