An issue with the way the history of enslavement is told in schools and at times, in the media, is that it doesn’t talk about what happened after in a way that is honest to the nuance and complexity of the topic. The idea that enslavement stopped with the 13th amendment and folks were free is a complete farce. This is why it’s complete BS when someone says that slavery was so long ago and Black folks should get over it.
In this session, we are going to look at the institution of enslavement from different angles. We start with a video of a genealogist who tracks modern day enslavement in the south well into the 1950’s and we learn from a man whose family was held against their will and forced to work. We will learn about Daniel Smith, the son of a man who survived enslavement, a rarity in of itself. Next we dig into first hand accounts of those who lived through slavery before the passing of the 13th through the Federal writers Project and the brilliant amateur historian William Still.
Like many aspects of honest history, this one will be difficult. I urge you to push through and learn and come for the discussion. We can empower each other to honor the lives of those lost through this horrible practice that still has its hold on this county to this day.
